5 Tips for Relaxed, Natural Family Photos

I hear it all the time: "We'd love family photos, but the kids won't sit still" or "We're just not very good in front of the camera." Trust me, you're not alone, and honestly, you don't need to worry. Some of the most beautiful family photos I've ever taken have been with families who were convinced they'd be terrible at it.

Here are five tips that will help everyone relax and enjoy the experience, so we can capture something genuinely special.

1. Let the Kids Be Themselves

This is my number one piece of advice, and I really mean it. The photos where children are laughing, running, exploring, or making silly faces are always, always, better than the ones where they've been told to sit still and smile.

If your toddler wants to pick up sticks, let them. If your little one keeps pulling funny faces, brilliant. If the baby decides that eating their own toes is more interesting than looking at the camera, we'll capture that too. Those are the real moments, and they're the ones you'll treasure most.

I've been photographing families for years, and I know how to work with children of all ages. My job is to capture the magic in the chaos. You just need to relax and let it happen.

2. Choose Comfortable Clothing

If you're tugging at an itchy collar or your little one is upset because their shoes are rubbing, it's going to show in the photos. Wear things that feel good. Soft fabrics, familiar favourites, and clothes that let everyone move freely.

For outdoor sessions around Monmouth and the Wye Valley, layers work wonderfully. They add texture to photos and mean nobody gets cold if there's a breeze. But the most important thing is that everyone feels like themselves.

3. Pick the Right Time of Day

This one makes a bigger difference than you might think. For outdoor sessions, the best light is usually in the early morning or the hour or two before sunset. Photographers call it "golden hour" because the light is warm, soft, and incredibly flattering.

It's also worth thinking about your children's routine. If your little ones are usually at their happiest and most energetic mid-morning, that's probably the best time to book. A tired, hungry toddler and a camera are not the best combination. We've all been there.

When we chat about booking your session, I'll help you find the perfect time based on the season, the location, and your family's routine.

4. Trust Your Photographer

This one might sound obvious, but it really does matter. Once the session starts, try to let go of any worry about how things are going. Don't stress about whether the children are behaving "perfectly" or whether everyone's hair is in place.

I'll guide you through the whole session. Where to stand, where to look, and when to just forget the camera is there and enjoy each other. I'll spot the moments worth capturing, even the ones you might not notice at the time. That's my job, and I love it.

Some of my favourite photos from family sessions are the in-between moments: the look a parent gives their child when they think nobody's watching, the siblings whispering to each other, the spontaneous cuddle. Those unplanned moments are pure gold.

5. Focus on Connection, Not Perfection

The best family photos aren't the ones where everyone is looking at the camera with a perfect smile. They're the ones where you can see the love, the laughter, and the connection between you all.

Tickle the children. Tell a silly joke. Have a group cuddle. Chase each other around. When you're focused on each other rather than the camera, that's when the real magic happens, and those are the photos that will make you smile every time you look at them, for years and years to come.

One Last Thing

Please don't put pressure on yourselves to have a "perfect" session. There's no such thing, and honestly, the imperfect moments are usually the best ones. A wonky smile, a windswept hairstyle, a child mid-giggle. That's real life, and that's what makes your family photos uniquely yours.

I'm here to make the whole experience relaxed, fun, and enjoyable for everyone. If you've been putting off booking a family session because you're worried about how it'll go, please don't. Get in touch and let's chat. I think you'll be surprised at how much fun it is.
